I paint simple strokes. Strokes that mature into figures that are emphasized by the intentions of chiaroscuro. Initially inspired by the natural tones of watercolor using light as a source to capture the mood of the subject, my work has evolved to studying rich brush works with deep contrast in hue to highlight the essence of a focal point, resulting in loose but believable oil paintings.

I began carving a path in 2010 with an attendance at Artprize followed by representation with Ugallery which gave me the experience of attending the AAF spring show in New York, NY, as well as building an international collector base. In the spring of 2012 I was presented with the Guilded Feather award as the Inaugural FWAC Master Artist and gratefully also was able to experience a first time hands on training by attending a workshop at the Scottsdale School of Arts in Scottsdale Arizona. I feel so fortunate that the Minnesota States Arts board awarded me a 2013 Initiative Artist grant to continue my studies.

Let It Ride was derived from a photo that my father Chester took took of his siblings at his parents’ Jack and Edna Ylitalo‚Äôs farm in Wolf Lake, Minnesota.
